Community Spotlight: Scarpignato Plumbing
Here at John L. Smith Used Cars, we spend a lot of time talking to people in our community. Folks from Wallingford, Swarthmore, Media, and all across Delaware and Chester County come through our lot, and we hear all kinds of stories. Lately, one topic keeps coming up: plumbing nightmares. Bad diagnoses, surprise costs, contractors who left a mess and never came back. It got us thinking about a neighboring business we genuinely respect, Scarpignato Plumbing and Heating, and the work that Mike Scarpignato has been doing to protect homeowners from some of the most expensive mistakes in the trades. We wanted to share what we've learned, because these mistakes are more common than you'd think, and most of them are completely avoidable.
Mistake One: Accepting a Single Diagnosis Without a Second Opinion
This is the big one, and Mike Scarpignato has built a significant part of his reputation on it. He's often the second call, the plumber who comes in after a large company has already delivered a frightening quote and told a homeowner there's only one path forward.
A recent example from Swarthmore tells the story well. A home was listed for sale, and a plumber had been brought in to camera the sewer line. The diagnosis was grim, and that first plumber admitted they weren't even sure how they'd approach the job. The realtor, someone who works regularly with Mike, called Scarpignato Plumbing and Heating. Within three hours, Mike had proposed two completely different solutions, one coming in around $25,000 to $30,000 and another at just over $50,000. The township gave approval for both within 48 hours. The crew is working on that job right now.
A few weeks before that, a homeowner in Wallingford had been told by a large plumbing company that they needed a full sewer replacement. Mike came in, assessed the situation, and told them they only needed a spot repair. That's it. The difference in cost was enormous, and the homeowner would never have known if they hadn't picked up the phone for a second opinion.
Mistake Two: Choosing a Plumber Based on Price Alone
Everyone wants to save money, and that's completely understandable. But there's a difference between a fair price and a cheap fix that costs you more down the road. Mike is direct about this: Scarpignato Plumbing and Heating doesn't do repairs that don't last. Every installation and every repair is done with longevity in mind. When you hire a plumber who cuts corners to win the bid, you often end up calling someone else six months later to fix what the first person got wrong.
Mike has nearly 25 years of experience as a master plumber and licensed inspector, and his lead technician Matt brings over 20 years of his own experience, including high-rise work in Old City Philadelphia. Shane, another member of the team, has 15 years in the trade. These are not apprentices learning on your dime. The expertise you're paying for is the kind that keeps you from having to pay twice.
Mistake Three: Not Understanding Your Repair Options
Too many homeowners don't realize there's often more than one way to solve a plumbing problem. Trenchless sewer repair, for example, can sometimes accomplish what traditional excavation does but with far less disruption to your property and landscaping. Mike's brother-in-law Bill runs the sewer and excavation side of the business, overseeing the trenchless equipment, the hydro jetting, and the drain cleaning operations. Having that depth of equipment and knowledge in-house means Scarpignato can actually present you with choices rather than pushing you toward whichever option is easiest for them.
As Mike puts it, sometimes you can take the highway and sometimes you take Route 1. The important thing is that someone is actually giving you both options.
Mistake Four: Hiring a Company That's Been Bought by Private Equity
This one might surprise you, but Mike flags it as a growing problem in the trades. Many local plumbing companies across Delaware and Chester County have been acquired by large investment firms or private equity groups. When that happens, the focus shifts from serving customers to hitting corporate margin targets. The people answering the phone and sending technicians to your home are no longer accountable to a name on a truck. They're accountable to a spreadsheet.
Scarpignato Plumbing and Heating is the opposite of that model. Mike has said plainly that he has no interest in selling the company. His long-term vision is to build toward employee ownership. When his technicians show up at your door, they are wearing a shirt with Mike Scarpignato's name on it, driving a truck with his name on it, and handing you a bill with his name on it. That accountability is not an accident. It's the whole point.
If you're a homeowner in Delaware or Chester County dealing with a plumbing issue, large or small, we at John L. Smith Used Cars would encourage you to give Scarpignato Plumbing and Heating a call. You can reach them by phone, and Tori in the office will make sure you're taken care of from the very first conversation. In a world full of big companies and bigger promises, it's good to know there are still people like Mike doing the work the right way.
